Local services in Broad Oak include a Bakery, a Garage, a Country Inn, a Furniture Shop and a Village Store. The quaint and historic Village of Hawkhurst is within easy driving distance and offers a wider selection of shopping for ones everyday needs.  However, Tenterden, Battle (7 miles), Rye (6 miles) and Royal Tunbridge Wells present a far more comprehensive range of Shops, Restaurants, Banking and Leisure Facilities.

Brede is a small Village situated midway between Rye and Tenterden. The countryside surrounding the area is timeless and relatively undisturbed by the summer visitors to the county. The River Tillingham lies just to the north and the River Brede to the south, both of which have pleasant walks along their banks. From mid-April to early May there are many Bluebell Woods abounding with wild garlic, primroses and other native flora. Broad Oak, the neighbouring Village, is doubly blessed by having a first rate B&B and one of the best value Country Inn restaurants in the South East. Brede was famous for its iron works with cannon and shot manufactured in the area until the late 1770's when gunpowder was produced. Three major explosions damaged the mills and finally, on 7th March 1808, Brede Gunpowder Mill was completely destroyed by a large explosion, ending production.

The surrounding area also boasts a wealth of excellent Schools ranging from the local Primary School at Broad Oak to the renowned Private Schools of Vinehall, Marlborough House, St Ronan’s, Claremont Preparatory and Senior, and Benenden to name but a few. For commuting purposes, the nearest Mainline Stations into London are at Robertsbridge, Battle and Etchingham.
